Sarah Brophy, a rider at Rose Cottage Riding School, wins GOLD at the 2010 Special Olympics Ireland! How about that? Out of 323 persons selected to represent Ulster at the Limerick event this year there were around 49 athletes from Ireland competing in Equestrian events. Sarah was in Team Ulster and there were 10 in that team. The Equestrian part of the Special Olympics was held in Clonshire Stables, Adare, Co. Limerick. Sarah, who has been riding for seven years had qualified last year in the Ulster regional competitions at the Omagh Riding for the Disabled Association (R.D.A.) stables. Well done Sarah - a fantastic job. See some photographs of this event here.

Just a bit of news about Harvey. Regulars to this web site will recall Harvey and Ivan a Clydesdale youngster and a lovely donkey who came to us but who soon went to live with Diane. Well, Harvey, who is still only three, was measured the other day at 16:3hh. Harvey looks like he will easily beat the usual 17hh when he's finished growing - though that could be a while yet. We'll try to keep you updated so watch this space... Recent (small) pics of him can be seen on our Behind the Scenes page.

We are delighted to report that Rose Cottage has a new donkey!! How about that for fast action? She is Coco and will be a friend for Ballynally who has been so upset at the death of her long time friend, Pepsi which we reported below. Go to our Behind the Scenes page to see details and a couple of pictures.

We are sad to have to report that our elderly white donkey, Pepsi passed away peacefully in her stable on the 9th April.. It was a very sad day for everyone and her friend Ballynally is very upset. We originally bought Pepsi to even up the girls to the boys and knew she was well in her 20's then, but it is still sad when these things happen. Pepsi was very happy here and had had a relaxed few years choosing to stay in her field or come into her stable depending on her mood and the weather. |

Halloween
was fun this year. The weather wasn't what you might call 'fab' - in fact it
wasn't good at all (!) - but that didn't stop us and a really good time was had by all.
We have a few pics (well, rather a lot actually!) to show, courtesy of

Our Pony Riders - together with a few others - took part in a Handy Pony contest on the 26th August! Some of the events were hilarious and everybody had a great time. Handy Pony tests are a good way to develop a well trained (ie 'Handy') pony that can negotiate obstacles and is a pleasure to ride. .See some of the pictures here on our pony Rider page and judge for yourself how they did....

Kate entered her Siberian Husky Puppy Bitch Mia (Show name: Rottiron Riva) at the prestigious Navan Dog Show on 15th August 2009. She won THIRD prize!! To watch a video of her being shown and then to have a look at the Official Results go to our RCRS Dog's page here.

Remember 'Little' Patrick, our mascot used as a link on our home page? Well, he's two and a bit now and we have managed to get a photo or two of him with his companion Music. They live out at a fairly remote three acre field so it's more difficult to get good pictures of them than it is of those who are actually located at Rose Cottage. As a result when we do get to see them we take rather a lot of pictures! The latest ones can be found here. There are quite a few! Do please be patient whilst the page loads. We think you'll find the wait worthwhile!

At the beginning of May 2009 Rose Cottage Riding School applied for and was awarded the coveted Fáilte Ireland Approval. Fáilte Ireland, is the National Tourism Development Authority of Ireland and it was established in 2003 to guide and promote tourism throughout the country. Their seal of approval is only given to tourism-related enterprises after a formal inspection involving a careful assessment against many criteria. Rose Cottage Riding School is proud to have achieved the necessary approvals and our visitors from both from Ireland and from overseas can visit Rose Cottage knowing that we fully meet the standards required by Ireland's National Tourism Authority. For the benefit of our many visitors for whom English may not be their first language, we are testing the use of Google's web page translation facility. On this page and to draw attention to it, we have placed a link to the left of the visitor summary at the top of this page. However elsewhere on this site the link is located at the bottom of each page Automatic translation of web pages can of course be very variable and it might not be as useful as we would like. Here are two dates (well, only approximate dates because we cannot really plan these things!) for your diaries. No fewer than two more of our mares, Faith (who only has one eye owing to an accident in her earlier life) and Whisper, are currently both in foal and, if after the experience with Clio, you can believe forecast equine delivery dates ever again (!), they are due to be delivered on the 16th and 18th of June respectively. Both foals have been sired by our own stallion Woody. So do keep coming back to see what news we have of them.

Regular visitors to this web site may remember that last year we had the Irish National Broadcaster RTÉ's Travel Programme No Frontiers filming at Rose Cottage. They filmed at the Cottage itself and the presenter of the programme, Katherine Thomas, was filmed at the yard and on our nearby beach with our Assistant Instructor Sam. It was broadcast at 19:30 on RTÉ One on 22nd February 2009 and was titled Inishowen.
We are pleased to thank and acknowledge RTÉ
in using these stills from their video archive
If, for any reason, you were not able to see it then, you can still watch this program by going to RTÉ's program archive at http://www.rte.ie/travel/nofrontiers/index.html (you can also click on the image above to go there) and then selecting the edition dated 22 February 2009. Once there, click on the Inishowen thumbnail to watch a short video clip. Katherine was riding Tabs and Sam rode Zuko. You'll get a great opportunity to see what galloping along the beach at Rose Cottage Riding School is really like - and with empty beaches, even in June too! You'll also get to see a little of the Inishowen peninsula and can read a bit about it as well. But, don't leave it at that! Why not come and try the real thing?
We took a few of our own still photos on the day when they were with us. You can see them here. Have a look....
Rose Cottage Riding School, Malin
Courtesy of Weather-on-Line we now have a link to a forecast of the weather at Malin Head on our Links Page. Click here to go to it and try it out. There are 1-4 and 5-8 day forecasts there as well as today's. Of course we can make no guarantee of its accuracy and in any case Malin Head, being rather more remote than Malin Town, can sometimes have its 'own' weather. Nevertheless, we hope it might be useful to you when planning visits to the area or just for interest to compare our weather with yours.
Rose Cottage Riding School, Malin
How well do you know our horses? We have just started our own Quiz Page where we show you a part of a picture of one of the horses and you have to decide which horse it is... To have a go click here. Best of luck.

A Happy New Year to you all!
In case you didn't manage to get a 'horsy joke' in your cracker this Christmas, here are one or two to make up...
What's the difference between a horse
and a blacksmith? Nothing, they'll both make a bolt for the door
A horse walks into a bar and the barman says: "What's with the long face?"
What's got eight legs, three heads and two wings? A man sitting on a horse
holding a chicken
A white horse walks into a bar and the barman says "Hey, we have a whisky named
after you!" and the horse says "What, Eric?"
How do you hire a horse?" Put a brick under each foot
☺
